COMPLACENT is issue 1 of Kaancho. Are you complacent? Smugly going about your day, pointing out flaws in the world while partaking in the maintainance of the status quo? Then this issue is for you. This issue is for the feminists who don’t feel feminist enough, the women who like to wear makeup, the women who love to do butch shit but are bad at it. Can you look yourself in the mirror and say you’re proud of what you’re doing or who you’re becoming? Feminine archetypes, binary gendered points of views, judgements from all sorts of people, reperpetuating notions of racialised and gendered essentialism. If you feel like you betrayed yourself, then this issue is for you. If you feel like you’re too critical on yourself, this is for you.

In both ‘Women and the act of vanishing’ and ‘Love Marriage,’ I contemplate the role of a woman, the performance of a lifetime, and how it becomes impossible to please everyone and also stay true to yourself. I also depict fantasy, both in consciously constructed ways, and in ways that may only exist in the overthinking mind. This comes back in my short film, ‘Body outside of flesh: Part 1 Observer behind the camera’, an ongoing project with the artist Rekha Bhatta. Body outside of flesh is a surreal experiment into womanhood, performance, and art.
